Which watch to buy for running in 2026. What really matters, where you can save, and which model fits what you need.
A watch won't make you faster. Training will. You need a watch to:
So don't choose by the number of features. Choose by four things.
Put the money you save into good running shoes or a chest heart rate strap.
Bright AMOLED screen and all of Garmin's training features. The best way into the Garmin world. No contactless payments and no dual-band GPS.
Dual-band GPS, up to 31 hours with GPS, only 32 g, offline maps. No payments and no music. The best accuracy for the money.
34.5 g, up to 32 hours with dual-band GPS. The downside: it doesn't work with TrainingPeaks directly. You can send workouts to it through Intervals.icu.
The previous generation, but it has everything you need for running. A good option if you find it on sale for less than the 70.
Everything the 70 has, plus contactless payments and a barometer. There's also a Music version.
35 g, dual-band GPS, bright screen, free offline maps.
Dual-band GPS, AMOLED, strong analysis of training load and recovery.
Maps, titanium, payments, works with TrainingPeaks. In dense city areas its GPS is weaker than the competition.
My pick for most runners. Dual-band GPS, bright screen, all of Garmin's training metrics. No full maps.
Same, plus maps, a bigger battery, a flashlight and ECG. If you want maps and everything else.
New in September 2026: a very bright screen, maps, titanium and sapphire. Similar features, but cheaper than Garmin.
A mountain watch with offline maps and a big battery. The best price in its class.
New in October 2026. Solar charging and enough battery for multi-day races.
Maps, flashlight, tough case. For people who want one watch for everything. More than you need for road running.
You can run with it, and the GPS is good. But you'll charge it every 1-2 days, workouts from a coach only arrive through third-party apps, and the touchscreen is awkward in the rain and with gloves.
If you already have one, start with it. If you're buying a watch for running, get a sports watch.
The wrist sensor works well on steady easy runs. It gets it wrong on intervals, in the cold and with tattoos on the wrist.
If you train by heart rate, a chest strap gives you accurate numbers. Any strap with Bluetooth and ANT+ works, for example the Polar H10.
If you're new, you can start without one and buy it later.
Before you buy, compare prices from a few sellers and check the warranty.
A watch shows you numbers. To make the numbers improve, you need a plan.
